Why Did Jesus Really Die on the Cross?

Jesus on Cross

Growing up Catholic we were taught that Jesus died on the cross to forgive us of our sins.

That explanation never quite seemed right to me?  I had questions.

What exactly was original sin, and why did Jesus’ death make amends for it?

Years later, I read a very powerful and well known spiritual book called, A Course in Miracles. It stated another explanation for Jesus’ death – one that made a lot more sense to me.

It said that Jesus allowed himself to die on the cross for two very important reasons.

Those reasons were…

1. To demonstrate that we have FREE WILL. This means that we are not puppets forced to blindly follow the rules of a controlling God. In fact, we are the exact opposites. We are beings that have the freedom to do whatever we want – even if that means killing our own messiah.

Think about it. If Jesus has used his power to protect himself from his persecutors what kind of a message would that have sent?  It would have shown that he is powerful and that we should follow his teachings…or else!

Jesus loved us so much that he sacrificed his own life to prove to use that we are free, right or wrong, to make our own choices in life.

This explanation seemed reasonable to me, because in my book, Awaken Your Power, it states that we have complete free will to do whatever we want in life BUT that there are also universal laws (spiritual laws) that have a direct reaction for every action or choice we take.  Two of these laws are the law of cause and effect (AKA Karma) and the law of attraction.  Both of these basically mean you get back whatever you give out.

These laws are universal, meaning they apply to everyone and everything and that we create our own reality each day because the choices we make determine the reality we attract for ourselves.

2. A Course in Miracles states that the second reason why Jesus died on the cross for us is to prove that we are eternal and cannot be killed.  It was necessary for his physical body to die in order to show humanity that his spirit lives on.  His death and resurrection supported his teachings of an eternal life after death.

He also proved that his love for us is unconditional.  He loved his persecutors even when they were killing him.

His famous quote documented that when he said, “Forgive them father for they know not what they do.”

What are your thoughts on this subject?    Do you agree with it or not, and why or why not?

I look forward to hearing from you.
